World of WarCrafts: The saturated artwork of Christina Marie
World of WarCrafts spotlights art and creativity by WoW players, including fan art, cooking, comics, cosplay, music, fan fiction and more. Sample the whole spectrum on our website’s Arts and Crafts in WoW page.

Artist Christina Marie’s WoW-themed work is nothing if not saturated — saturated with color, saturated with game references, saturated with humor. It’s the kind of stuff you can toss onto your desktop and then promptly lose vast chunks of time peering and snorting in bemused delight at the details scattered across these works. (Because I whipped up the Christina Marie art gallery, below, in just minutes. Without any linking or idle chatter in the website newsroom. You believe that, right? Right?) Her talent for twisting elements together (elements of art, elements of the game … you name it) earned her a nod from Blizzard itself with inclusion in its 2011 holiday fan art calendar (as was our own Kelly Aarons). World of WarCrafts visited with Christina Marie to find out where the deluge of color and inspiration comes from.

An interface for every healer In World of Warcraft

Oren.1 is the paladin interface, showing all of the pertinent buffs on the target at the bottom of the Grid frame, with built-in timers from the excellent addon OmniCC. Bati is the priest Grid setup, displaying shields, Weakened Soul, Prayer of Mending and other vital priest information right on the Grid frame. Paired with a PoM counter addon, this setup proves very powerful for priests.

Shaman is, obviously, the restoration shaman profile, sporting Earth Shield and Riptide trackers. Personally, as a resto shaman myself occasionally, I’ve found most healing user interfaces that are too complex become only hindrances. Less has always been better for me as a shaman healer, but your mileage may vary. Bati’s shaman setup is still in a state of flux, however, so any capable shaman should hit up Bati with some tips!

Maiie is the druid interface, and while I don’t have much druid healing experience, I asked my buddy and he said it looked great. So yay, druids!

Arena is a profile setting that surprised me.mostly because of how come simple.

Arena is a profile setting that surprised me, mostly because of how some simple changes to Grid can have such a dramatic effect on the PvP healing game. Bati’s specific arena setup runs with paladins in mind, but easy tweaks should be enough to let any healer make use of the basic work done. Enabling the arena setting nets a bigger Grid layout, with larger debuff icons for quicker recognition of what needs to be removed — an excellent choice for the beginner arena player. Speaking of arenas, all of you who have been begging for some PvP talk on Reader UI of the Week should definitely tune in next Tuesday (hint hint, wink wink, nudge nudge).

The Grid layouts Bati has created can also be found in a larger UI compilation known as Bati’s UI, an excellent minimalist setup that is eye-catching and well crafted. For those of you looking to overhaul your entire user interface, Bati’s would make an excellent learning tool, reference guide or just a place to snag some ideas from. I cannot commend Bati enough for putting together such a simple to use, multi-class and multi-role user interface.

Another gathering profession that has the ability to make you a huge amount of gold is Mining. With the Mining profession, you will have to the opportunity to craft armor, potions, weapons, and jewels.

Mining works well with three other professions which are Blacksmithing, Engineering, and Jewelcrafting. With Blacksmithing, everything that you will need to make is done by first mining. This also applies to Jewelcrafting as well as Engineering, everything that you need will have to be mined.

These three professions will suit you the best with Mining. Keep in mind that with these professions, if you elect against mining, you will be responsible to purchase your metals and gems which will be fairly expensive. Remember that Mining is a primary skill and you can have only one other primary profession, keep this in mind when choosing to learn or unlearn.

To get your mining career off to an actual start you will have to be trained. First you will need to buy a Mining Pick, which should remain with you at all times. Then find a trainer which should be pretty easy to find, as they are located in several cities.

One of the bonuses of choosing Mining as one primary profession is that it comes with Find Minerals and Smelting. These two things will benefit you abundantly along the way. With Find Minerals this is a skill that will show you on the radar where there are mineral deposits and how close they are. Smelting will assist in converting your ore into metals that are usable.

Skills 1-65—Copper

This will be for the most part pretty short and sweet, as this is the easiest metal to find and mine. If you would like you can choose to just buy the copper and move on to the next skill. You can look for copper in the starting areas and the lower level zones. Some areas to keep in mind are Loch Modan, Durotar, Dun Morogh and the Northern areas of the Barrens.

Skills 65-125—Tin

Collecting tin is generally easy and should not give you much of a problem. If anything it may become a bit more difficult as you get higher through the levels. Look for the tin at the auctions, as you may be able to find a good and cheap deal on it.

Skills 125-175—Iron

There are several zones to gather Iron, listed here are some: Hillsbrad Foothills, Searing George, Arathi Highlands, Desolace, Duskwood, Tanaris, Thousand Needles, and Swamp of Sorrows.

Skills 175-250—Mithril

Listed here are zones to find Mithril: Thousand Needles, Western Plaguelands, Stranglethorn Vale, Dustwallow Marsh, Azshara, Alterac Mountains, Felwood, Hillsbrad Foothills, Silithus, and Feralas.

Here you will want to look for thorium veins. These will help you get a lot of gold and get that gold quickly!

Skills 250-300—Thorium

Again, here is the list of places to mine: Winterspring, Azshara, Un’goro Crater, Burning Steppes, Searing George, Eastern Plaguelands, and Blasted Lands.

Just in case the original $5k was too much for you on that Dell Warcraft laptop deal, Dell has apparently dropped the price to a still pretty high $4k, or $3999. That’s still more than our questionable pricing out of the laptop and all of the goodies that come with it, but then again, it is a sweet gaming-spec, Warcraft branded laptop — can you really put a price on a paradise like that?

And yes, it still does come with all the old stuff, including Alliance or Horde branding, all the Warcraft software, and a bunch of other goodies including those beta keys that we still have no idea are for. Where Dell found $1000 to cut out of that deal we can’t figure either, unless… you don’t think they were just topping more than a cool grand of straight profit on this deal, were they? Sneaky moneymaking bastards!

Update: Apparently we now know where they got $1000 out of the deal — it doesn’t come with all the extras any more. According to reader DevilStick, who chatted with a Dell sales rep, all it comes with is the mousepad and possibly a laptop bag. So the novels, the beta keys, and all of the books and other goodies were limited time only.

Update II: Dell themselves have contacted us with the news that the sales rep DevilStick chatted with was wrong: even at the lower price, it still does come with all the goodies. So if $5k was too much, but $4k is worth it to you to have “the ultimate Warcraft laptop,” order away. From wow.com.

1. Was ist elementar?

Kleines Geheimnis in Gang Upgrades. 3. Elementare Nachteile

World of WarCrafts spotlights art and creativity by WoW players, including fan art, cooking, comics, cosplay, music and fan fiction. Show us how you express yourself; contact our tips line (attention: World of WarCrafts) with your not-for-profit, WoW-inspired creations.

There’s nothing sweeter than finding a way to fold one passion into another. Maybe that’s why we love Warcraft cakes so much? Of course, it could be as simple as the intersection of good taste and tastes good. Yeah, that’s it.

This week, World of WarCrafts brings you a virtual patisserie of WoW delectables. First up, we visit with another winner from Blizzard’s Holiday Dessert Contest. Next, we’ll show you how they celebrate weddings in Mulgore (hint: it’s all cake, baby). Finally, brace yourselves, because we bring you the ultimate gingerbread house: Snaxxramas.

Kharti from <Utility> of US Dragonmaw-H is so crazy for WoW cakes (more than just the award-winning Frostmourne extravaganza introducing this post) that we needed to create a photo gallery to hold all the photos. And fortunately for us (because peeking behind the scenes at what goes on in the kitchen is the yummiest part), Kharti loves to talk cakes. Although she’s a full-time IT professional in the real world, she also holds a degree in patisserie and baking and bakes as often as possible for her friends and family.

Gallery: Kharti’s cakes

Everything about Kharti’s Frostmourne cake was made completely from scratch and is completely edible — not even any internal support or wires — over two sugar-crazed days, with the assistance of Kharti’s guildmate and boyfriend, Aeon. “Needless to say, our apartment was chaos for those two days as I scrambled to finish the cake a week before the submission date so we could bring it to a party that our guild was having that weekend,” Kharti remembers. “On a side note, we have a really cool raiding guild that is based largely out of Portland, Oregon. We get together regularly for guild parties that are usually pretty chill but have gotten pretty wild on occasion. Our shindigs are so well known in the guild that we regularly have members attend from out of state (Washington, Wisconsin , California and Arizona), and our planned summer gathering may be attended by several Canadian guildies and even one from Venezuela!”

So this cake definitely had a destiny to fulfill, in more ways than one. Fueling the effort were some 15 pounds of sugar, 5 dozen egg whites, 4 pounds of butter, 2.5 pounds of shortening, 3.75 pounds of milk, 3.75 pounds of flour, 2 pounds of powdered sugar and various other small ingredients. “We underestimated the amount of materials we needed and had to make several return trips to the store,” Kharti confesses. “The end result was a cake that weighed somewhere in the neighborhood of 35 pounds, was 5 inches tall, 12 inches wide, 16 inches long and had decorations that broke the 14-inch mark. It took two people to carry, barely fit in the car — and when the base was cooling, we had to take everything out of the refrigerator plus we had to move the refrigerator just to fit it in.”

The effort proved equal to the task. “After feeding 15 guildies, filling several take-home boxes and supplying the bar staff with their weekly sugar dose, we were barely able to consume half of the cake,” Kharti reports. “Needless to say, we also made very good friends with the bar staff and their families!”

Assembling the masterpiece

The cake was a three-layer white cake with orange flavor, with a butter cream topping featuring a vanilla-mint mix. The terrain and cave was entirely hand-carved. Rocks were created from rock sugar dyed greenish-blue. “This was created by taking sugar up to 298 degrees and then stirring royal icing into the sugar, returning it to heat to let it soufflé and then pouring it out in one piece for cooling,” Kharti explains. “Broken up — Aeon used a hammer when he thought I wasn’t looking! It was sanitized, though — and placed around the cake, it made a really nice visual texture to break up the smoothness of the rest of the cake.” Sprinkles of white and green sugar around the cave contributed to the icy effect.

Frostmourne and Icecrown Citadel itself are made from pastillage (like Necco wafers). “I made the dough and rolled it out so I could cut out the shapes for the Icecrown Citadel and Frostmourne that Aeon had drawn out for me earlier,” Kharti says. “They are very fragile, both drying and dried, so I made them a bit thicker than normal so that I wouldn’t chance breaking them and having to do it all over again (as it takes two days for it all to dry). Once they dried, we sanded them down. I had Aeon color the 15 pieces that made up the Citadel with a few colors of pixie dust. It was his first experience with the stuff, and there was a fair amount of griping and ranting going on as he discovered how big a pain it can be and how much of a mess it can make. The cake board was covered with royal icing, a little of which was used to add all the shape and highlights to Frostmourne, which I dusted with pixie dust after it dried. Making Frostmourne was my favorite part out of the entire project, kind of my pride and joy. Finally, the Citadel was glued together with royal icing, using little pieces of pastillage as support to give it the 3D look.”

The baking team finished the entire project with a fine dusting of powdered sugar. And voila! Icecrown lives (until <Utility> got hold of it, anyway).

WoW nerd cake

Kharti’s cake gallery also includes a few shots of a cake she created for a surprise nerd/WoW-theme birthday party for their guild’s healing officer. The chocolate fudge cake cake featured ganache icing with three different colors of modeling chocolate. “I decorated the cake to look like a nerd’s shirt and pants,” she explains, “then tied the Warcraft theme into the cake by putting small Horde logos on the suspenders and bow tie on the top.” We’d say she tied this project up to perfection!

Mulgore wedding cake

Next in the cake lineup: the wedding cake of Shootmeplz and Sari of US Hakkar-H. “Image taken in Mulgore, with the cake designed to sort of flow with the image semi-seamlessly,” notes Shootmeplz. Congratulations to the happy couple!

Snaxxramas

Some people don’t create mere gingerbread houses; they go straight for Snaxxramas. We’re betting creators Shevaun and Orvel of US Twisting Nether-H had a lot of fun putting this together. It looks like they’ve thrown out some sort of strange frosting snare to catch incoming Alliance players … We bet being ported directly to the summoning stone inside wouldn’t be such a bad deal in this instance!a
